We are the image of God.
Without God we are nothing , absolutely nothing.
The concept of a mirror image comes across on two accounts.
First of us being made in God’s image in creation in Genesis and secondly as we are born again in the image of Christ within and upon us to be reflected into the world.
Philosophically this poses another interesting concept that I have attempted to illustrate.
If we stand in front of a mirror we see a reflection of ourselves in the mirror.
That reflection, however, is nothing of itself because if we shift away it no longer exists.
It is as if nothing.
We are no longer seen in the glass.
We have nothingness as a reflection.
It’s as if we are dead.
Life returns when the one being reflected returns and is right there centrally in front.
Then the image becomes real, alive.
Jumps into existence with every move, change of stance, expression and gesture.
This abstract thought for me somehow gives some tangibility to a faith in something we cannot see.
Our Creator God is always there.
Just as we in our earthly life are always there and yet it is only in the presence of a mirror that we see ourselves.
It is only in being central to our focus and vision we see God.
It is similarly only in the reflection in us that God or Jesus can be seen by onlookers.
Just as we need to stand central in the mirror for our reflected image to be fully seen so we must stand with Jesus as the centre of our lives for Him to be reflected and fully seen.
Anything less than central brings partial images, fragments, distortions, failures to fully comprehend or perceive.
Too great a distance aside or away and most of the image is lost and forgotten and again non existent.
If we are the image of God, without God we are non existent.
Also others will not see God if there is no image for them to see.
Jesus tells us to be the salt and the Light in the world.
That is what He is.
He commissions us to be Him in the world.
His image for others to see.
No small responsibility then.
No mean feat.
We cannot do it alone as we do not exist if we are not reflecting Him.
We can only achieve that goal if we have Him central in our lives to reflect and be made visible.
The illustration shows us and our reflected Image in the Mirror.
Because we are not central the whole image is not existing or seen, only a partial image and nothingness in the remaining mirror.
The part not reflecting looks non existent. Were we to move even further right there would be an empty mirror, no image.
More to the left our whole image could be reflected.
Three scriptures that come to mind:
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”Genesis 1:27 ESV
“and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”Colossians 3:10 ESV
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”Romans 12:1-2 ESV
