“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.“
We learn much in the bible about who Jesus is and what He did and does but only once does Jesus mention His heart and yet relationally knowing His heart transforms us.
Caring deeply when we are not portrayed at our best which is His deepest desire for us to be.
We in our humanity may feel that we have to work our way up to the perfection He sought after when in fact, in the kingdom it is at our weakest, when we collapse and fall down He strengthens and holds us up.
Jesus was love covered in flesh who hung out with those who were the lowest. As Christ He remains love never closer than when we are low.
Two words, gentle and lowly.
Gentle implying, not rough or forceful, not distant or withheld, open and accessible, sweet. Lowly implying humble, approachable, no prerequisite required, no proud status or red tape to get past.
Much can be learnt from the era of the Puritans who married together the bible in one hand and the heart in the other in their preaching to the everyday people.
There is a sense that while our sin is grievous to Jesus it doesn’t repel but rather draws Him closer to us in His yearning and longing for better for us.
Just as God did not choose us when we were high. He does not forget us when we are low. We feel in our humanity that we have to work our way up into that place.
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,“
We falsely project our small thinking onto them because our world has trained us in a deserving mentality that is again the opposite of kingdom thinking.
We could take 10, 000 steps away from God. It takes but one to be back, to return to Him.
Jesus’ blood covers all of our sins.
Those in ignorance before we knew Him and were converted and equally all those subsequently that we feel even more guilty for.
He continues to wash us clean, forgiving and forgetting as we confess and repent on multiple occasions.
We have an ever present advocate and intercessor in our hearts. Jesus atoned for our sins 2000 years ago and He continues to press the reset button for each of us.
We feel as if we move in and out of a good status with God and in fact we remain always in His love.
“I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.”
Salvation is ordained by God. Accomplished by Christ. Supplied by the Holy Spirit.
This is the commune of the Trinity that when we enter into the daily dance with we can pass on to our children and all who we are in community with.
Jesus does not have a heart of wrath nor of a task master. Jesus tells us Himself and we can endorse . His heart is gentle and lowly.
The illustration shows the child touching the Lords gentle and lowly heart. His raised hand of blessing and intercession. His other of protection shielding and love. The light pushing back the darkness.
Six Scriptures that come to mind:
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.””Matthew 11:29-30 ESV
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”Ephesians 2:4-10 ESV
“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”1 John 2:1 ESV
“Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.”Hebrews 7:25 ESV
“And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”Romans 8:27 ESV
“I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.”John 17:23 ESV
